RE: New Rule removing the use of Tomahawk/Leading edge/Back stick shots/Reverse sweep/Reversie in Collegiate Divisions 2, 3 and 8 aside competition for the remainder of the 2021 Collegiate season
Safety concerns were raised at a recent Club Council Executive (CCE) meeting particularly around the safe and effective execution of reverse shots in the lower Collegiate Competition Divisions. The majority of the time players in the lower Collegiate Competition Divisions undertaking these reverse stick shots are lifting the ball in an uncontrolled and therefore dangerous manner whilst failing to restrict their stick follow through in order to prevent it striking an opposition player.
Raised balls and sticks have contributed to a significant number of reported head injuries this season, with some players now unable to return to the game this year and others having to undertake a long stand down period due to concussion protocols.
All players, team managers and umpires (named or club) need to ensure that the game is kept as safe as possible for all participants.
As a result of these concerns the CCE has placed restrictions on the use of Tomahawk/Leading edge/Back stick shots/Reverse sweep/Reversie in the Collegiate Divisions 2, 3 and 8 aside competition’s.
The new rule effective immediately is as follows:
Collegiate Divisions 2, 3 and 8 aside competition’s shall no longer be permitted to use the Tomahawk/Leading edge/Back stick shots/Reverse sweep/Reversie, due to concerns for player safety and welfare. Players can only use the leading edge in a controlled sweeping motion, where the stick is in contact with the ground at all times (Ideally with hands apart).
Note: This rule does not apply to Collegiate Division 1 Competition, but the expectation remains that players in this grade are only allowed to execute the Tomahawk/Leading edge/Back stick shots/Reverse sweep/ Reversie as long as it is played with safety in mind at all times.
This new rules applies to Collegiate games scheduled from the 26th July 2021 until the end of 2021 Collegiate season.
